Islamic geometry was developed in the 7th century, a time when to be a scientist was to be an artist, an artist was a mathematician, and a mathematician was a theologian. The study of any subject started with understanding the natural patterns and beauty seen on the land and in the sky.
In this study of art every line drawn is done with a particular purpose, replicating celestial movement and the symmetry found in nature. With simply a ruler and compass you can unlock the dance of the universe and witness nature’s heavenly choreography in action.
Today, this form of art is known by many titles: divine geometry, Islamic illumination or Arabesque art to note but a few. Its intricate patterns have become the signature of an ancient time, stretching from Europe to the Far East.
ZJC Designs examines geometric art across traditional materials such as paper and plaster, to more unconventional medium such as embroidery and weaving. Every time the outcome is a unique, hand-crafted piece of art, blending ancient craft with a modern day hand.
Many of the geometric patterns explored across the portfolio have been taught and inspired by the London based institution Art of Islamic Pattern, under the excellent tutelage of both Adam Williamson and Richard Henry.
